Palette Shader is a tool created for the  https://itch.io/jam/hexcode-showdown-jam-2. During the voting process, I wanted help visualizing what different color pallets would look like, so I developed a shader that would do exactly that.

You can upload your own image by dragging it into the window (if using the web version, be sure to drag in all the way into the game's frame). You can then use it as a sample (something to be shaded) or as a pallet.

If you want to create a pallet, create an image with several equal sized rectangles fully colored by a single RGB color. Drag that image in, tell the tool how many colors there are, and it will do the rest. It will divide the image into rectangles based on how many colors you tell it and sample the color in the CENTER of the image. Use something like THESE (as long as the center of each section is the color you want, you're good). You can use a website like Coolors.co to get some pallets to try.

TODO (maybe. If I feel like it):

  • Scenes buttons
    • Switches between scenes, like sample images, video, uploaded samples, or color field

  • Download Button (for downloading images processed
  • Video Upload (limited to WebM & Ogg Theora)
  • Adjustable Window aspect
  • More + Better Adjustment tools
  • Palette Authoring (a tool for creating a pallet within the application)
  • Better Mobile UI
